Barbara J. Kirby

Barb Kriby As a working professional, Barbara learned to navigate the cumbersome health care system over 15 years while managing her elderly parents with complex care issues in two different health regions. She knows how to get things done in a perplexing and complicated system, and to act as an advocate when the system seems to fail.

Barbara's business background as an investment advisor for over 20 years — building and maintaining solid client relationships — and her training in conflict resolution and ethics have provided her with strengths well suited to dealing with seniors' concerns and the health care sector.

Intent on improving the quality of life for seniors, Barbara chaired and co-chaired the family council at Little Mountain Place Care Home for 8 years, and subsequently became vice-president of the Association of Advocates for Care Reform, promoting and educating families on the benefits of family councils in care homes. The new BC Residential Care regulations, effective October 1, 2009, now acknowledge the role that family councils can play in care facilities. Barbara continues to act as a spokesperson and give workshops for ACR.

Dad and favorite companion and care aide

A strong belief in respect for our elders, honouring their life experiences, and treating them with dignity is Barbara’s driving force. Her approach is to practice Gentle Advocacy, to recognize potential for problems and to address issues before they require further action if at all possible.

Barbara has her certification as a Seniors Housing Specialist; is a Certified Professional Consultant on Aging; on the board of the South Granville Seniors Centre; Board Secretary of Burnaby Seniors Interagency Society; member of CARP, COSCO (Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of B.C.) and ACR (Association of Advocates for Care Reform).
